Hemingway and Gellhorn is my 4th movie working with Director Phil Kaufman…5th if you count my role as a dying German soldier at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark which Phil wrote.
In Hemingway and Gellhorn I played an American journalist covering the Spanish Civil war….and unlike Hemingway, my character spends most of his time at the bar. This gives contrast to Hemingway’s involvement in the action.
I spent about 3 weeks sitting at the bar often with Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman at the old train station in Oakland.
One day they were preparing to simulate a bomb explosion just outside the window of the bar…which would rain glass and debris over those of us inside. The special effects people were briefing us about how to respond safely. When they finished their sobering instructions….Nicole turned to me and my fellow ‘drinking journalist’ and asked, “well, are you ready to get blasted?”
Yes…Nicole Kidman is funny.
